However, a prompt diagnosis is advisable to eliminate anything more serious.<\/p>\n<h2>Symptoms<\/h2>\n<p>Most ear infections usually clear up after 3 days, although some symptoms can last up to a week.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of an ear infection may include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ac-list ac-warn\">\n<li>inner ear pain<\/li>\n<li>sickness<\/li>\n<li>discharge from the ear<\/li>\n<li>impaired hearing<\/li>\n<li>high temperature<\/li>\n<li>irritation in and around the ear<\/li>\n<li>lack of energy<\/li>\n<li>feeling of pressure within the ear<\/li>\n<li>scaly skin in and around the ear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Additionally, babies or young children\u2019s symptoms may include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ac-list ac-warn\">\n<li>irritability and restlessness<\/li>\n<li>loss of balance<\/li>\n<li>lack of appetite<\/li>\n<li>no reaction to some sounds<\/li>\n<li>touching or pulling of the ear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Outer Ear Infections<\/h2>\n<p>Infections of the outer ear, known as otitis externa, can often cause inflammation, pain, and swelling of the ear canal.<\/p>\n<p>Widespread otitis externa (often referred to as &#8216;swimmer\u2019s ear\u2019) can affect a larger part of your ear canal until it reaches your eardrum.<\/p>\n<p>More localised otitis externa can originate from the infection of a hair follicle and create a boil within the ear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-underline\">Symptoms Include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ac-list ac-warn\">\n<li>Discharge from the ear<\/li>\n<li>Severe pain in the ear<\/li>\n<li>Temporary hearing loss<\/li>\n<li>Itching inside the ear<\/li>\n<li>Red or swollen ear canal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, Ahmeys&#8217; pharmacists can prescribe different courses of treatment depending on the nature of the ear infection.<\/p>\n<h2>Inner Ear Infections<\/h2>\n<p>Inner ear infections (also known as Labyrinthitis) can be caused by viruses or bacteria.<\/p>\n<p>If you exhibit symptoms of inner ear infection you should seek further consultation as they can have serious effects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-underline\">Symptoms can include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ac-list ac-warn\">\n<li>Loss of balance<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness<\/li>\n<li>Vertigo<\/li>\n<li>Hearing loss<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Antibiotics are not usually prescribed to treat inner ear infections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-underline\">However, it may be necessary in cases where:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ac-list ac-warn\">\n<li>ear infection does not see improvement after 3 days<\/li>\n<li>you or your child has an illness that could risk further complications (e.g. cystic fibrosis)<\/li>\n<li>you or your child has fluid leaking from the ear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ear Infections Ear infections occur when viruses or bacteria within the ear result in swelling and a build-up of fluids.
